It was widely agreed, coming into the World Championships, that we would be playing in a “carry Top laner” meta. That has absolutely proven to be the case, as champions like Darius, Fiora, Olaf, and Riven have surged to the forefront.
Both Semifinal matchups will feature key showdowns in the Top lane, with MaRin vs. Soaz and Huni vs. Smeb. The table below presents some interesting stats to help draw comparisons across the four Semifinalist Top laners.

MaRin looks very impressive off the bat, with the highest KDA and gold share and very impressive DPM and damage share. But his death share is also the highest, showing that opponents have focused hard on taking him down.
Smeb rivals MaRin, sitting first in damage output and second in KDA, with a low death share, but has given up 4 First Blood deaths.
Huni has done a great job of securing First Blood kills and assists, with 6 FB participations in 9 games. His damage output is also impressive. His deaths don’t look so good, though.
Soaz is the least carry-oriented of the four, doing much less damage and getting less early help from his team, with only one FB participation so far. Origen also fights less often than the other teams, providing fewer opportunities to deal damage.
Champion choice has played a pretty noticeable role.
Soaz’s three Lulu games have contributed to his low damage output, but consider that in his one game on Fiora (a victory), he did only 294 DPM, half as much as MaRin (584) and Smeb (579) have averaged in their Fiora games. Soaz’s highest damage output has come from his Vladimir game, where he dealt 417 DPM.
Huni’s best damage outputs have been 823 DPM on Gnar (!) and 613 DPM on Jarvan IV, but he also did just 250 DPM as Hecarim and 277 DPM on Yasuo.
Can Soaz stand up to MaRin? Will Smeb do to Huni what he did to Ssumday? We’ll find out soon.
