Academy Standouts: 2020 Summer Week 5

Academy Standouts highlights the players who performed best in the most recent week of NA Academy play. I’ll discuss a few of the most noteworthy players, then list some other strong performers below.

Yusui, Mid, Team Liquid

We’re back with my pick for the best currently available Academy Mid, Yusui, who once again managed to look good despite his team being inconsistent around him. He carried on Irelia in a win over CLG Academy, then had a really solid Orianna game despite a loss to GG Academy.

The more time passes, the more Yusui is distinguishing himself as someone who can perform under a variety of circumstances, with or without his team investing quality resources into him. I remain convinced that he deserves a legitimate shot at an LCS spot, and I think there are multiple teams that could give it to him in 2021.

Treatz, Support, TSM

Rumours are swirling that Treatz will get the call up to TSM’s LCS roster for the coming weekend, and I find those rumours very credible, not just because Doublelift and Treatz have been duo-queuing but also because Treatz has very much earned it with his level of play. He had another good week, though not his best, playing a farming Wukong in a loss to C9 Academy and then showing up more stronger on a more traditional Nautilus against Immortals.

Triple, Mid, FlyQuest

Triple hard-carried with a mid Kog’Maw against 100 Academy and then made himself the only bright point on his team as Corki in a loss to DIG Academy. After a great start to the split, he has fallen off somewhat in the intervening weeks, but in week 5 he again showed what he’s capable of, and what he’ll need to keep doing on a more consistent basis if his team is going to find success.
