AC/AM Standouts: 2021 Spring, Week 9

AC/AM Standouts highlights the players who performed best in the most recent week of NA Academy and amateur play. I’ll discuss a few of the most noteworthy standouts, then list some other players whose performances caught my eye below.

NOTE: I am not including the Northern Arena tournament in this article, since it is an off-calendar tournament that is not part of the official Proving Grounds circuit.

Prismal, Bot, Golden Guardians Academy

The Giant Slayer Gauntlet tier 1 tournament wrapped up with an exciting GG Academy reverse-sweep against EG Academy, and Prismal was one the key figures in that comeback, playing Kai’sa and Xayah after starting the series on Ezreal and Aphelios.

GSG 6.1 68.9% +66 563 8.9

Prismal is one of the best candidates to break through into the LCS bot lane out of the Academy scene. He and Chime are always looking to make plays in the bot lane (sometimes to their own detriment, to be fair), and Prismal’s team fighting usually manages to shine through even if the laning phase backfires a bit. Keep an eye on Prismal at Proving Grounds later this split as he tries to prove himself as an LCS promotion candidate.

Contractz, Jungle, Evil Geniuses Academy

Contractz was the strongest overall performer on EG Academy during their Giant Slayer Gauntlet run, asserting himself on Udyr and Hecarim and also bringing out picks like Taliyah and Gragas. He still looks like the same player who helped Ssumday shine brighter last year than he has so far in 2021, and he seems to thrive in the faster-paced, relatively chaotic gameplay of an Academy/amateur setting. He’ll need to reel that back in a bit for EGA to make a run at Proving Grounds, but his play in GSG stood out enough to earn a highlight here.

GSG 4.9 70.5% +343 376 6.2

Yunbee, Mid, Golden Guardians Academy

One of GG Academy’s Scouting Grounds pickups, Yunbee has been rounding off his rough edges and had a strong showing last week, particularly in the team’s three wins in the GSG Grand Finals, playing Twisted Fate, Orianna, and Viktor. He is focusing pretty heavily on control mages, working within a standard pocket of the current meta, and doing his job in team fights with occasional work outside of his lane in the early game when he’s able to get priority.

He still has some poor outings when he gets attacked heavily in lane, and mispositions at times before or during fights, but things are coming together and he is turning into of the team’s stronger points.

GSG 3.6 67.6% +275 518 8.7
