Academy Standouts: 2021 Summer, Week 2

Academy Standouts highlights the players who performed best in the most recent week of NA Academy play. I’ll discuss a few of the most noteworthy standouts, then list some other players whose performances caught my eye below.

Kenvi, Jungle, 100 Thieves Academy

Photo of 104559240068795394.pngKenvi showed up big on a hard carry Xin Zhao, which he played three times for three wins. He also played Rumble, but it was all about the XZ, really. He paired it with ry0ma’s Karma twice, before 100A’s coaching staff finally let ry0ma have some fun, too, on an Irelia in the last game of the week (but Tenacity played Lulu that game so yeah).

Week 2 13.4 88.2% -554 721 7.1
Overall 8.1 79.7% +30 596 7.0

Seeing Kenvi do his thing on hard-ganking, aggressive, snowballing jungle champions is really a treat.

Luger, Bot, 100 Thieves Academy

Photo of 99566405664329447.pngSometimes there’s nothing too specific to say about the performance of a player like Luger because he just does things right, shows up at all the right spots, and gets the job done.

And sometimes he outplays a 2v1 against one of Academy’s better bot lanes and turns a certain death into a casual kill.

Kalista, Jinx, and Varus were his weapons of choice this week, if you’re wondering, but it doesn’t really seem to matter. He’s just good.

Week 2 8.0 52.6% +270 559 9.4
Overall  5.0 49.0% +390 513 9.3

Copy, Mid, Cloud9 Academy

Copy executed at a high level in every game this week, playing a passel of melee champs in Nocturne, Lee Sin, and a pair of Setts. He was good on TP plays and roams, especially as the secondary playmaker providing followup, but also offered plenty of primary playmaking and did well to occupy space and time in team fights.

Week 2 5.2 72.2% -178 410 6.5

Additional Standouts

The following players also stood out.

  • Darshan, Top, Cloud9 Academy
    • Darshan was the leading standout for C9A against FLY Academy, on Lee Sin and Lucian, and followed it up with another solid Lee Sin against CLG Academy, but his Lulu didn’t have the same impact.
  • Isles, Support, Cloud9 Academy
    • Nautilus hooks, roams to mid, and aggressive Tahm Kench plays characterized Isles’ week.
  • Pretty, Mid, Immortals Academy
    • Pretty’s team fight flanking on Sett was beautiful against DIG Academy, and he also played well on Viego and Lee Sin. Not a control mage player!
  • RoseThorn, Jungle, Golden Guardians Academy
    • Improvements in jungle pathing and good gank effectiveness are starting to show through more and more for RoseThorn, especially when he can play champions like Volibear that seem to be more within his comfort zone.
  • V1per, Top, Immortals Academy
    • V1per arrived in Academy this week with the carry performances and high-pressure gameplay that led No Org to their Proving Grounds title in Spring. He even played a game of Vayne for funsies.
  • Zven, Bot, Cloud9 Academy
    • This guy is too good for Academy. What’s he doing down here?
