Academy Standouts: 2020 Summer Week 1

Academy Standouts highlights the players who performed best in the most recent week of NA Academy play. I’ll discuss three of the most noteworthy players, then list some of the other strong performers below.

Triple, Mid, FlyQuest

FLY Triple 2020 Split 2.pngWith Damonte returning to the LCS, there’s an opportunity for another player to step into his position as the best Mid in Academy. In week 1, Triple made a strong argument for slotting him into that spot.

LCS 2020 Summer Preseason Power Rankings

The LCS 2020 Summer Split kicks off this Friday, and we’ve seen quite a few changes to the rosters. Aside from Cloud9‘s solid hold on the LCS’s top spot, the balance of power around the league was pretty precarious in Spring, and the movement of players like Doublelift, Dardoch, and Damonte could introduce a lot more volatility, making it hard to predict who might emerge to take a shot at C9 come playoffs.

I foresee a lot of movement from a few mid-tier teams, and a holding pattern from others, which should allow for some leapfrogging and hopefully a tighter pack of contenders looking to dethrone C9.

The following power rankings are my attempt to sort through the rosters and gauge each team’s strength, and where I think they’ll finish by the end of the split. Along the way, I’ll make notes of what I had predicted for Spring, and what actually happened, to provide some context for what I’m thinking now.

Edit: I don’t normally edit this type of analysis after it’s posted, but the Immortals announced an unexpected starting roster on June 10 and I felt compelled to revise accordingly.

Academy All Stars: 2020 Spring

I’ve been watching Academy closely all split, and highlighting the standout performers each week. Now that the regular season has wrapped, it’s time to assess the entire nine weeks of work and honour the best player at each position.

NOTE: I’m unable to report full-split stats for these players due to ongoing issues with Riot’s match history service, but you can see the stats for weeks 1 through 8 here.

Scroll to the end for the TL;DR of 1st-team and 2nd-team selections.

5 Academy Standouts Appearances

As I wrote in the week 9 Academy Standouts: Damonte is still the biggest star of DIG Academy, but if you want to see the foundations Damonte is standing on, keep your eyes on the top lane.

Lourlo has been a consistent performer, often working in the shadows of his carries but doing everything his team needed him to do. Continue reading Academy All Stars: 2020 Spring
