Academy Standouts: 2021 Summer, Week 6

Academy Standouts highlights the players who performed best in the most recent week of NA Academy play. I’ll discuss a few of the most noteworthy standouts, then list some other players whose performances caught my eye below.

Kumo, Top, FlyQuest Academy

Photo of 99322534298200420.pngKumo is technically the LCS starting Top laner for FlyQuest now, but with FLY’s new Academy Top not ready to join the team yet, and the LCS starters all playing Academy this week, Kumo was still playing for the week, and he delivered another strong set of games in the vein of what he’s been doing to earn his promotion over the past month.

Academy Standouts: 2020 Summer Week 7

Academy Standouts highlights the players who performed best in the most recent week of NA Academy play. I’ll discuss a few of the most noteworthy players, then list some other strong performers below.

Tuesday, Mid, Counter Logic Gaming

CLG Tuesday 2020 Split 1.pngCLG have had a relatively weak Academy program overall this year, but Tuesday has really been stepping up lately and giving the team something to be proud of. His pair of Rumble games in week 7 was almost enough to earn a couple of wins, but even though CLG came out 0-2, Tuesday’s personal contributions were still worthy of highlighting.

The Best Possible LCS-Eligible Academy Lineup

This article was available early to Patreon subscribers.

When Immortals swapped their LCS and Academy rosters around three weeks ago and then came out and actually won a couple of games, it forced some people to re-evaluate their opinions about the perceived lack of talent in North America’s tier 2 league. Then Poome and Contractz came up and helped 100 Thieves spoil Cloud9’s big at an undefeated season.

Sure, IMT “Academy” is anchored by Xmithie, Apollo, and Hakuho, but Allorim and Insanity are definitely playing their parts. And 100 Thieves have Ssumday, which at times renders any other observation about their roster moot—he’s just that good. But caveats aside, there is real potential in Academy, and I’ve been working to highlight it all year long.

The success of recent Academy-to-LCS promotions got me wondering: if I could take the players currently competing in Academy and form them into an LCS-eligible “super team,” who would I pick?
